So, you can’t tell me that there is no such thing as Woodland Fairies. You may not have seen them, and I may not have as well, but……does that really mean they are not there watching us as we meander through their forest?
I can imagine them swinging their feet as they perch on a branch or peeking out from the hollow of a log. I think they work together with resident birds (except pigeons, I mean really have you ever seen a pigeon in the woods? They would be run out!), pudgy bumble bees and the multitude of colorful butterflies, to create the flowery meadows and the mossy rock surfaces.
I work tirelessly on my gardens – watering, weeding, cultivating… – but no one plants and cultivates the meadows, and the meadow will outshine my garden any day! Does this not make you take pause……just for a moment?
Maybe as the meadow or forest flowers go to seed, the Woodland Fairy will take those seeds and fly about, tucking them in to the earth just right and then nurture them in the spring, pouring extra dew drops their way to help them along.
I see you are either thinking – this lady is plum nuts – or – find your mind wandering and wondering. I wonder… could this be possible? Next thing you know you are heading to the woods and stopping to peek into that hollow moss-covered log on your path to see if you can catch site of a Fairy or two.
I could see a whole family living in this fallen tree. And those mushrooms, what great places to hide.
My understanding, according to The Girls Book of Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker, is each flower has its own Fairy. They wear the colorful petals from their own flower as clothing, which would explain why they can hide so well amongst the meadows and paths. There are also some naughty Fairies up in the trees, that may, for sport, chuck a walnut or two at you, then scamper and hide.
So, the next time you find yourself in a wooded area such as this:
Let your imagination flow and look for some woodland Faires. If you find some, let me know! If you have children with you, they will probably find them first! If nothing else, enjoy the beautiful nature that surrounds you and take in a few deep breaths. This will make the Faires happy.
